I keep coming back to one line this week: "Find out who you are. And do it on purpose."

Dolly Parton said that, and then she spent sixty years proving she meant it. When we lost her this week at 80, the tributes all pointed to the same thing underneath the music and the movies and the theme park and the philanthropy: she was completely, recognizably herself, in public, for her entire life. That is a rarer thing than it sounds.

I think about authenticity a lot in my own work, and I think we've gotten the definition wrong. We tend to treat it like a style choice, a certain way of showing up, a tone of voice. But authenticity isn't about how you portray yourself. It's about whether you let what is actually alive in you come forward and be present, unedited.

Dolly never dulled herself down. Not the accent. Not the rhinestones. Not the humor she used as armor and invitation at the same time. "I would never stoop so low as to be fashionable," she said, which tells you everything about how little she needed outside approval to know who she was.

Here's the part I think we miss most, though. Authentic doesn't mean loud. It doesn't mean bold takes or edgy opinions or saying the thing that will get the most reaction. You could spend a lifetime around Dolly Parton's public life and never quite know where she landed on politics or the news of the day. What you always knew, without a single doubt, was how she felt about people. She loved everyone. Fully. Without conditions attached. "If you see someone without a smile, give them one of yours," she said, and she lived it.

That is what heart-centered authenticity actually looks like. Not "how boldly can I express my point of view," but "how can I be exactly who I am, in the most loving way, without needing anyone's permission or applause to do it." Dolly wasn't performing for recognition. She had already given herself the recognition. Everything she gave the world after that was overflow.

"I have to not harden my heart, because I want to stay open to feel things," she once said. That's not a soft sentiment. That's one of the harder disciplines there is, to stay open in a business and a world, that constantly rewards armor.

If I ever could have sat down with her, I have to believe she'd have told me something simple. You just do you. You shine your light, and you let it magnify out into everything you touch. That's about all any of us can do.
